SASSA Care Dependency Grant: How To Apply

The SASSA Care Dependency grant is a special grant initiated by the South African government that is being served by the South African Social Security Agency(SASSA) to cater for children with mental or physical disability who are in the care of guardians or parents.

Requirements for SASSA Care Dependency grant.

There are qualification requirements one must meet before they can apply for the SASSA Care Dependency grant. The requirements are as follows;

i. The applicant must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident or a refugee.

ii. The applicant must be a parent, a primary giver or foster parent.

iii. The applicant and the child must reside in South Africa.

iv. The child be under the age of 18 years.

v. The applicant must provide a medical or assessment report confirming the child is severely disabled and receives permanent care or support services.

vi. The child or children must not be permanently catered for in an institution funded by the state.

v. The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test (except if you’re a foster parent).

Required Documents for SASSA Care Dependency grant.

As an applicant you will need to have some documents available before you can apply for the Care Dependency grant. This documents are list below;

i. The applicant needs to provide the birth certificate of the child.

ii. The applicant needs to provide and ID and that of the spouse(In case this document is not available, the applicant will be made to complete an affidavit which will be provided by SASSA when filling the form).

iii. The applicant must provide proof of relationship with spouse. These are some documents needed under this category:

  • A marriage certificate is the couple are still together.
  • A divorce order if the couple are no more married.
  • A death certificate of a spouse if any isn’t alive.

iv. Another sworn in affidavit will be needed by the applicant indicating the income of the couple involved.

v. The applicant should also provide a medical assessment indicating that the child in question is mentally or physically disabled and therefore receives care from a guardian.

vi. A proof of an Unemployment Insurance Fund(UIF) OR a discharge certificate from the applicant’s previous employer if they’re unemployed.

vii. Proof of court order which indicates the child has been placed in the custody of the the foster parent.

Means Test For SASSA Care Dependency grant.

An applicant needs to pass the SASSA Means Test before he or she can be approved to receive the Care Dependency grant. This Means test is done to evaluate the income and assets of the applicant which will determine whether they qualify for the grant or not.

Applicants who are single must earn R 249 600 or less a year any amount above this disqualifies you to receive the grant. Married applicants must earn more than a combined income of R 499 200 a year.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Application

STEP 1: Go to any of the SASSA offices near you with the documents listed above to pick up your application form.

STEP 2: You will need to ask for the services of any available SASSA officer when filling the form. He or she is supposed to guide in filling the form in case you come across any difficulty.

STEP 3: After you are done with completing the form, a stamped receipt will be given to you by the SASSA official with his or her name on it. The receipt should be kept well as it will serve as proof of application.

STEP 4: No payment should be made to any official from SASSA because application for the Care Dependency grant is free.

Kindly take note that the applicant can delegate a friend or family member to do the application on their behalf if the applicant is sick or not too fit to go.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Amount

Not along ago SASSA increased the amount for all SASSA grants with the exception of the SRD grant. The Care Dependency was increased from R1 990 to R2 080 on April 2023. SASSA further stated in a post on their website that grant will see another significant increase by R10 on October 2023 which will be the grant R 2090.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Outcome.

After the Means test has been done and the applicant has passed the test, it may take up to 3 months to know the outcome of the application. SASSA will send you a feedback concerning the outcome of the application in writing.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Cause for Suspension.

There are several ways an applicant can get his or her application suspended by SASSA. Some of the reasons are stated below;

i. When there is a change in the circumstance of the child or applicant be it medically or financially.

ii. The grant will be suspended when it turns out that the grant was approved in error.

iii. When SASSA notices false information in your application.

Reasons for SASSA Care Dependency Grant Being Cancelled.

The SASSA Care Dependency grant will be totally cancelled when the following happens;

i. When the child receiving the grant dies.

ii. When the child or the guardian is no longer in South Africa.

iii. When the applicant fails to claim the grant for three consecutive months.

iv. When the child attains age 18.

v. When the child gets admitted into a state institution.

vi. When the child is no longer a refugee.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Appeal After Outcome.

After SASSA releases the outcome of the application there is a chance for the applicant to make an appeal. This should be done in writing to the Ministry of Social Development through the minister stating when you need the grant and should be reconsidered.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Payments

There are three mode of payments for SASSA Care Dependency grant to all SASSA beneficiaries. The grants can be channeled through the methods below;

i. SASSA does cash payments to designated paypoints.

ii. Another payment method is through the applicants bank. Postbank payments are also available.

iii. Finally payments are made to institutions like old age homes.
