SASSA Child Support Grant: How To Apply

The South African government introduced the SASSA Child Support grant to cater for children under 18 years who are being taken care of by a primary care giver. The amount is given to the primary caregiver which in many cases could be their parents, guardians, foster parents or grandparents.

Requirements for SASSA Child Support grant

Requirements for the SASSA Child Support grant are as follows;

i. The applicant or caregiver must be a South African citizen, live in South Africa permanently or be a refugee.

ii. The child under care must not be cared for in any state institution.

iii. The applicant must be the primary caregiver of the child or children concerned.

iv. The applicant must pass the Means Test with their spouse.

v. Both the applicant and the child concerned should be resident in South Africa.

vi. The child or children must be born after 31st December 1993.

Documents Required For SASSA Child Support Grant.

There are documents required of you as an applicant to make available when applying for the SASSA Child Support grant. The list below will guide on which documents to provide;

i. The applicant must provide a South African Identity Document(ID) with a bar code on it.

ii. The child’s birth certificate must be provided, it but have an ID number.

iii. The applicant must provide a Unemployed Insurance Fund(UIF) card if you’re unemployed or better still a discharge certificate from your previous employer.

iv. An information showing that the applicant is the primary giver of the child must be provided.

v. The applicant must provide a salary slip, a 3 month bank statement, pension slips or proof of income.

vi. An affidavit from both the biological parents of the child and the police must be made available.

Other Relevant Documents Needed.

i. A baptismal certificate of the child must also be provided if there is any.

ii. A Road to Health of the child in question must be provided by the applicant if there is any available.

iii. A temporal ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs must be provided by the applicant.

iv. A sworn in document which has been signed by a reputable person like a religious leader, councillor or a social worker who knows both the applicant and the child must be made available during the application process.

v. A marriage certificate of the applicant is needed if there is any.

Means Test For SASSA Child Support Grant

An applicant needs to pass the SASSA Means Test before he or she can be approved to receive the Child Support grant. This Means test is done to evaluate the income and assets of the applicant which will determine whether they qualify for the grant or not.

Applicants who are single must earn R52 800  or less a year any amount above this disqualifies you to receive the grant. Married applicants must earn more than a combined income of R120 000 a year.

SASSA Child Support Grant Application

The SASSA Child Support grant is easy. Unlike other social grants like the Social Relief of Distress grant(SRD) which requires you to apply online, the Child Support grant requires you to visit an office before you can apply.

STEP 1: Find the nearest SASSA office and pay them a visit to pick up an application form with the documents listed above.

STEP 2: After you pick up the application form, there will be SASSA officers readily available to assist you in filling the form. They are there to assist you incase you make any mistake.

STEP 3: A receipt with a SASSA stamp will be given to you once you’re done filling the form. This receipt will serve as proof for your Child Support grant application, therefore should be kept very well.

STEP 4: No applicant should pay any amount when applying because all SASSA social applications are FREE.

QUICK NOTE: Incase the applicant isn’t able to go personally to apply for the Child Support grant, he or she can delegate a family member or a friend to do the application on their behalf.

SASSA Child Support Grant Amount

The South African Social Security Agency(SASSA) recently increased the amounts rewarded to the various social grants and the Child Support grant is no exception. Initially the amount given to Child Support beneficiaries which was R 480 in October 2022 was later increased to R 500 as at April 2023, that makes a R20 increase. It was later increased to R 510 in October 2023 making in a R 10 increase.

It’s quite unknown if there will be any increase in the near future.

SASSA Child Support Grant Outcome.

After the Means test has been done and the applicant has passed the test, it may take up to 3 months to know the outcome of the application. SASSA will send you a feedback concerning the outcome of the application in writing.

SASSA Child Support Grant Cause for Suspension.

There are various grounds on which the SASSA Child Support grant or application can be suspended. These are major reasons the grant may be suspended;

i. The grant or application can be suspended when the circumstance of the child or caregiver changes. This can be financial changes or mental changes.

ii. There could be a suspension of the application or the grant due to the outcome of the review.

iii. When the applicant fails to present the child or commits fraud during or after the application.

iv. When the child’s grant is approved mistakenly, it will be suspended.

v. When the applicant and the child refused to co-operate with SASSA during the application review process.

Reasons for SASSA Child Support Grant Being Cancelled.

SASSA will stop or cancel monthly payments to the beneficiary when the following instances happen.

i. When the child receiving the grant passes away.

ii. The grant will be cancelled on the last month where the child gets to age 18.

iii. The grant will be cancelled if the primary caregiver doesn’t claim the grant on three consecutive months.

iv. When the child receiving the grant is no longer in the country.

v. When the child gets admitted into a state institution.

SASSA Child Support Grant Appeal After Outcome.

After SASSA releases the outcome of the application there is a chance for the applicant to make an appeal.

This should be done in writing to the Ministry of Social Development through the minister stating why you need the grant and should be reconsidered.
