The SASSA Disability Grant is a social grant issued by the South African Social Security Agency(SASSA) to cater for persons with mental or physical disability therefore making them unfit to work. Applicants who get approved of this grant will be given an amount on a monthly basis.

Requirements for SASSA Disability grant.

Before applying for the SASSA Disability grant, SASSA has some laid down requirements an applicant must meet before he or she is fit to apply. The list below details the requirements for a Disability grant applicant.

i. The applicant must be a citizen of South Africa, be a resident of South Africa or a refugee.

ii. The applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 59 years old.

iii. The applicant must not be cared for in any state institution.

iv. The person must have been disabled temporarily or permanently.

v. The applicant must pass the Means Test which will be done by SASSA officials.

vi. The applicant must not earn more than R86 280 if he or she is single or earn not more than R172 560 if married.

vii. The applicant must not have assets worth more than R1 227 600 if single and R2 455 200 if married.

viii. The applicant must not be a recipient of any of the social grants.

Documents Required For SASSA Disability Grant.

In addition to the laid down requirements, any applicant is required to have some important documents available before they can apply. Check out list of documents below;

i. The applicant must provide a valid South Africa identity document(ID).

ii.The applicant must provide proof of residence.

iii. He or she must provide proof of income of dividends if there is any.

iv. The applicant’s bank statement of 3 months will also be needed during the application process.

v. An applicant must provide an Unemployment Insurance Fund(UIF) or a discharge certificate from their previous employer.

Other Relevant Documents Needed.

i. An applicant must produce a refugee status permit if there is any.

ii. SASSA will need the proof of marital status to know if the applicant is single or married.

iii. A copy of the will and the first and final liquidation and distribution accounts if your spouse died within the last five years will be needed if there is any .

iv. A sworn in document signed by a reputable person verifying your name and age is also needed. A reputable person can be a councilor or a leader of a religious group.

Means Test For SASSA Disability Grant.

An applicant needs to pass the SASSA Means Test before he or she can be approved to receive the SASSA Disability grant. This Means test is done to evaluate the income and assets of the applicant which will determine whether they qualify for the grant or not.

Applicants who are single must earn R96 840 or less a year, any amount above this disqualifies you to receive the grant. Married applicants must earn more than a combined income of R193 680 a year.

When it comes to asset assessment, the single applicant shouldn’t have his or her assets valued more than R1 372 800. On the other hand married applicants should not have their assets valued over R2 745 600.

SASSA Disability Application

STEP 1: Pass by the nearest SASSA office to pick up an application form to fill. Don’t forget to take the documents listed above with you.

STEP 2: A SASSA officer will be allocated to you after you pick up your form. He is there to assist you in filling the form and also provide you with the necessary information.

STEP 3: You must complete an affidavit on a standard SASSA format in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths who’s not a SASSA official which will happen at the SASSA office.

STEP 4: After filling the application form, your fingerprint will be taken by the SASSA official. A receipt will also be given to the applicant which will serve as proof of application therefore must be kept very well.

NB: The applicant can delegate a family member or a friend to do the application on their behalf if by any chance they can’t go to the SASSA office themselves.

SASSA Disability Grant Amount

How much grant does SASSA give to Disability grant beneficiaries? This is one of the most searched terms online lately. Well, the South Africa Social Security(SASSA) recently increased the amount given to some beneficiaries of the social grants and the Disability grant was no exception.

The SASSA Disability Grant which was initially R1 990 as at October 2022 was increased to R2 080 as at (April 1 2023) and R2 090(October 1 2023). So there is a R90 and R10 increment respectively.

It’s quite unknown whether there will be another increment in some months to come.

SASSA Disability Grant Outcome.

After the Means test has been done and the applicant has passed the test, it may take up to 3 months to know the outcome of the application. SASSA will send you a feedback concerning the outcome of the application in writing.

SASSA Disability Grant Cause for Suspension.

There are various grounds on which the SASSA Disability grant or application can be suspended. These are major reasons the grant may be suspended;

i. The application can be suspended if the circumstance of the applicant changes.

ii. The application will be suspended when the applicant fails to co-operate with SASSA whiles the application is being reviewed.

iii. The application can be suspended when the applicant misrepresents himself.

iv. The application will be suspended when SASSA realizes that the application approval was a mistake.

Reasons for SASSA Disability Grant Being Cancelled.

i. SASSA will cancel Disability grants if the beneficiary passes away.

ii. Grants will seize if the beneficiary gets admitted to a state institution.

iii. Grants will be cancelled if the beneficiary fails to claim the grant on three consecutive months.

iv. Grants will be cancelled if the beneficiary is no long in South Africa.

SASSA Disability Grant Appeal After Outcome.

After SASSA releases the outcome of the application there is a chance for the applicant to make an appeal. That is when the application was not approved.

This should be done in writing to the Ministry of Social Development through the minister stating why you need the grant and why you should be reconsidered.

SASSA Disability Grant Payments

There are three main mode of payments that will serve as a channel for beneficiaries and they are as follows;

i. Payments will be done on a particular day at a specific pay point chosen by SASSA.

ii. Payment will be sent electronically to the applicant’s bank or post bank account. Kindly note that electronic transfers comes at a charge from the bank in question.

iii. The last payment method is through institutions acting as an administrator for the grant. A example is a welfare organization.
